I am Yang Gang - Grace's Story

My Name Is Grace and I AM YANG GANG

I am a 52 year old woman — mother of two adult twin boys, both of whom are neurologically atypical, unable to work and living at home.

Both my husband and I are disabled; he was blinded in an industrial accident and a car accident left me with permanent and degenerative spine damage. I have never voted, although I supported Donald Trump in 2016.

I am Yang Gang because I am EXHAUSTED.

I am exhausted by the constant hoops I must jump through to prove that I am still permanently disabled as if the word “permanent” changes its meaning every six months. I am exhausted by the endless and dehumanizing questions about why I can’t work.

I am exhausted by the system which allowed my sons to drop off public medical benefits when they turned 18, while providing no assistance despite their neurological impairments.

I am 52 years old and I’ve lived a hundred years of exhaustion.

I’ve been holding my family of four together on a little more than $1000 a month in social assistance. Rent and utilities take 60% of our income. We rely on charity to fill in the holes in the pantry.

The Freedom Dividend would quadruple our household income, from $1,000 to $4,000 per month.

We have no savings, that’s just a pipe dream. We have no ‘rainy day fund’ because we live underwater all the time. We are one flat tire away from being homeless. I went to Walmart to buy a can of beans and my only pair of boots gave out, this was Thanksgiving Day.

I AM YANG GANG because there are millions of families just like mine who live in exhaustion and hopelessness; stuck at the bottom with no boots, let alone bootstraps with which to pull ourselves up.

Andrew Yang gives me hope.

Hope that I can leave behind the empty stomachs and empty gas tank. Hope that I might be able to wake up without gnawing dread about what will happen to my sons when I’m gone.
